Exhibit A: How paying it backwards works

fig. 1

How it works

Pay It Backward Day was born from one of our earliest challenges. It involves the selfless act of purchasing a drink for the person behind you in line (see fig. 1, right), even if you don't know them! Can you imagine this simple act done over 500 times in a row? Come make it a reality!

How to participate

We've created a Facebook event to support Pay It Backward Day. If you'd like to attend Pay It Backward Day and have a hand in breaking a world record, you simply need to mark that you will be attending the event on Facebook. RSVP on Facebook now!

In addition, you can participate in conversations with other Do Gooders across the web by using the hash-tag #pibTO on Twitter and other social networks.

Hey Bernard,
Did you end up going? I was gonna post this event on here a couple days ago... But I was having an issue about it-it bothered me that they did not even consider the impact on the environment for this event, all those coffee cups used- uggh- So I wrote to them, last week and I actually made some progress, they emailed me back and told me they made up a page encouraging people to bring there own mugs- and to make the event as green as possible by riding your bike to it or car pooling....small headway I guess- maybe if they do it again it will be marketed better from the beginning to bring your own mugs... I think I will have nightmares tonight about all of those coffee mugs and #6 plastic lids that were used today.

But on a good note- half the proceeds went to Sick KIds- But I also heard that late last night the Second Cup agreed to match the donations of Queen St. & John St.owner and now, instead of 50% of proceeds going to SickKids, all 100% do! Great job!!

PS- I was listening to Jeff Fishers teleconference last week-and heard you ask your question, way to keep on it!!! :)

Very Good points. Here's an interesting post called 'Greenwashing Your Coffee' (with a Toronto connection):

Great article Bernard thanks for sharing... It is obvious there has not been much progress in the last couple years on the recycling pick ups initiatives they talked about in this article that was written in 2006. I was not surprised by the companies responses either- and of course star bucks sent a generic obvious template email reply to Ron- oh dont even get me started on starbucks. lol...

I have have been talking with second cup at queen and john the last couple months about recycling and cup waste etc... and the employees have been trying to push it as well. Did you know they do not have ANY recycling- its juts not the cups- its the milk cartons and everything. HOWEVER- the employees make there own bins and recycle the stuff elsewhere- now thats some great employees! Tim hortons has some recycling.
Starbucks- again dont get me started lol...

Also, I found it odd that second cup did not promote there $.10 off if you bring your own cup policy... the first time they gave me 10 cents off i was confused- then they explained- I dont get why they dont use it as more of a promotion- everyone likes to get money off- even if it is only $0.10....

and so true about Tim hortons being dumb founded when asked to put coffee into your own mug- I have many times watched in disbelief as they pour coffee into a paper cup then into mine- so they can measure how much to put in...

Time to wake up coffee companies! there was an article the other day in the metro about paybackwards and they mentioned some of the "green" initiatives they did on saturday- they also had a gross stat- 1 000 000 foam and paper cups are used EVERYDAY IN TORONTO!!!

PS- Huffingtonpost = great website
