New Book: The World Without Us

From the Book Site: http://www.worldwithoutus.com/about_book.html

In The World Without Us, Alan Weisman offers an utterly original approach to questions of humanity's impact on the planet: he asks us to envision our Earth, without us.

In this far-reaching narrative, Weisman explains how our massive infrastructure would collapse and finally vanish without human presence; what of our everyday stuff may become immortalized as fossils; how copper pipes and wiring would be crushed into mere seam

The Service Economy

Check out this full podcast. Its about the service economy as opposed to the product economy. Very much design driven.

Sustainable Swag?

At Fairware, we take a fresh approach to promotional products. We source only those that make a statement and reflect your commitment to social and environmental responsibility. They're good for your business and better for the planet.

I wonder if promotional products are inevitable. Would it be better to have online promotional products. Or promotional carbon credits? I don't know.

Greening the Grocery Store

Article on Design Observer

In 1988, the Society of the Plastics Industry developed a resin identification code — a numbering system from 1 to 7 — categorizing different types of plastic. The code is centered in a triangle made of arrows chasing each other. This mark is commonly misidentified as the recycling symbol. Though the system was instituted to “facilitate the recycling of post-consumer plastics,” the chasing arrows graphic… Continue

A progress report

To the Designers Accord community,

The Designers Accord was created fewer than 10 months ago. In that time, we have evolved from a small call to arms for designers to a powerful global movement, the scale and breadth of which has not been experienced before in the creative community.

In the last month, we were pleased to welcome many new design firm adopters from all over the world, as well as dozens o… Continue

I agree.

I looked on your website, it was quite inspiring! I'm still a student and sometimes it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have the chance to work with IFFTI ( http://www.iffti.com/ ) with my school, Ryerson, this year. I'm also trying to get the Student Union to engage the student populous (heavily design/communication based) more in sustainable challenges. In fact this term's Student Union has made a promise to have a 'sustainability' office, they just don't know what that means yet. I hope to be involved in creating a medium for students to play with sustainable design.

Do you have any experiences with campuses?

Hey Meg,
This summit is about sustainability in Design. We're working on integrating it into studio environments, school curriculum, personal lives, and professional organizations.

Its also important for Designers to be rewarded and respected for doing cause-based work. So we're starting a travelling show profiling cause-based design as a great thing for designers to be involved in.

Most importantly, this summit is about talk. We're here to work on these ideas so we can make the world better. That world is yours too, and you definitely can have an effect.

Hi!

I am interested in this online community, but don't know much about it. What is this summit you talk about?
